A Christmas Prayer
A few weeks ago, CFI spoke out on behalf of Asia Bibi, a Christian wife and mother who has become the first woman sentenced to death on blasphemy charges in Pakistan.
Our online petition drive calling for Asia’s release generated thousands of signatures from concerned citizens across the U.S.; a few days later, we passed on the news of Asia’s possible pardon by the Pakistani government.Asia has been in prison since the summer of 2009. Now, just days before Christmas, she remains incarcerated — and in as much danger as she’s ever been. A Muslim cleric recently offered a reward of 500,000 rupees ($5,8000 USD) to anyone who kills her, and to make matters worse, Asia’s entire family is also at risk. A recent threat from the Taliban, who has warned of retribution if Asia is pardoned, has caused the family to flee from their home and go into hiding. Asia’s pardon could also mean a volatile backlash against minority Christians throughout the entire country.
This holiday season, please remember to pray for Asia and her family through this extremely difficult time. Please pray for their safety, and pray that God would grant them the courage to remain strong in the face of such terrible persecution.
And as we enjoy our many blessings this Christmas, please always remember the persecuted — in Pakistan and everywhere around the world — where fellow Christians suffer so greatly for their faith.
