SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (Christian Freedom International) President Barack Obama is making a special effort to improve U.S. relations with the Muslim world, but to do so, he must get his facts right. In an interview with France’s Canal Plus, released by the White House on June 2, 2009, President Obama suggested that the United States could be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. “And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world,” said President Obama. But the facts clearly say otherwise. An extensive new survey by the Pew Forum on “Religion & Public Life in America” shows that overall, nearly eight-in-ten (78.4%) adults report belonging to various forms of Christianity, about 5% belong to other faiths, and almost one-in-six (16.1%) are not affiliated with any particular religion. According to Pew, other major faith traditions in the U.S. include Jews (1.7% of the adult population), Buddhists (0.7%), Muslims (0.6%), Hindus (0.4%), and members of other world religions, including Bahia’s, Zoroastrians, and others (which together account for less than 0.3% of the population). Members of a variety of other faiths, including Unitarians, New Age groups, and Native American religions, combine to make up an additional 1.2% of the population. With a population of more than 304,000,000, and with Islam at around 0.6% of the American populace, 1,824,000 adherents to the Muslim faith are hardly a majority, and certainly make America not even close to being one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. Consider the following:
America has less than half of the number of Muslim adherents in France, a nation with less than a third of our overall population. As Pew found, more than 237,120,000 Americans claim the Christian faith. President Obama proclaimed recently that “the United States has been enriched by Muslim-Americans.” Sadly, an increasing number of elected officials in Washington are unwilling or afraid to say the same thing of the Judeo-Christian worldview which shaped our nation. |
