New Beginnings

New Beginnings

Contibute to our refugee support efforts

After decades of living in fear and persecution, thousands of Burma’s refugees are finally living in peaceful freedom throughout the United States. Since the resettlement initiative was approved by the U.S. State Department in 2007, dozens of Karen and Karenni individuals and families have chosen to make their new home near CFI headquarters in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

With the help of a loving community, CFI has led the effort to support these local refugees in every way possible, from housing and job placement assistance to everyday chores such as grocery shopping and paying bills. A team of volunteers also developed an English tutoring class for the refugees, as well as a mentorship program designed to assist them with medical needs and important life skills such as money management, driving lessons, and educational options.

In 2009, CFI opened the doors of the Freedom Inn Motel in Sault Ste. Marie, turning a renovated building into a source of affordable, short-term apartment housing for refugees as they assimilated to life in the United States. All of these grateful refugees are now living joyous, productive lives, and are making meaningful contributions to the Sault Ste. Marie community.

The collective efforts of caring volunteers have made a monumental difference for Karen and Karenni refugees, not only in Sault Ste. Marie but in many communities throughout the U.S. To learn more on how you can help with refugee resettlement, contact CFI at 1-800-323-2273.
